Growing an avocado plant from the pit is a great project for kids to do. It is so easy. Our kids love to eat avocados and really wanted to try sprouting one. We have tried to sprout one before and it didn't work. This time it grew and the kids were so excited! Now we need to transfer it into a pot. :)

I have never been able to grow avocado from the seed. Do you split the seed itself with a knife and put it in water or try and poke holes in it with toothpicks (which I never been able to do as the skin is too tough) Please post back on how you do it. Thanks so much! Nikki
I remember doing this as a kid. Our tree grew twice as tall as me (no short jokes please). Super fun, nice glass;)
Here is how to sprout your seed:
1. Wash your seed thoroughly.
2. Poke 3 toothpicks into the sides, so that your seed can sit suspended near the top of a glass. Do not cut the seed. It splits open on its own when it starts to grow roots.
3. Rest your seed on the glass and fill with water until the bottom half is submerged. Keep an eye on the water level so that your seed bottom remains submerged.
4. Place it in a sunny location and watch it grow. Once it has a significant root and the plant has emerged from the top, plant it in a pot. Leave the top half of the seed above the soil.
NOTE: Not every seed will sprout. If one doesn't work, try again. :) This was our third attempt!
Here is a link telling which kind of avocado to choose, Florida vs California nd how to tell the base from the top, and other things that will help you to grow one.
