Has anyone used any of the "free" (or almost free) Internet phone services such as net2phone where you can make free long distance calls on your PC?

My sister in Europe uses Skype to call me for chats. She does have to pay something -but it's much less than European phone rates, which are up there and seemingly few plans as we have.

Would like info on the Yahoo system, as I would like to try it - Gotta get a headset...

download yahoo chat. It works great! I live in Canada, and was chatting online with a girl last night in Australlia. It was a wee bit static, but what do you want for free? I chat with another friend who lives 1500 miles away in the USA. It's very clear, but once in a while there's a pause between talking and hearing. No big deal though, I'd recommend it any day. The photo sharing is awesome to BTW!

While not quite what you may be looking for, K7.net offers a free phone number w/free voicemail and fax services. When people call your number and leave a message or fax, you get an email that will let you either receive the message as an attachment or a link to their website so you can listen to the messages online. You can even try to get a vanity number. http://www.k7.net

I have been using www.dialpad.com for about two months now and I have found it to be equal to a poor cellphone connection. (P133mhz 64mb 56K) You need to use headphones and a microphone or a headset (That you can get FREE until April 30 at www.visitalk.com ) otherwise you get an echo. I tried net2phone's "free" service and found it was anything but free. (CC needed) Others have you sign up and then tell you they are not online yet. www.mytalk.com offers a toll free # that you can call out (no longer from pay phones) for two minutes (after listening to a few commercials) to anywhere in the US and your friends can call you toll free (2 min). You can check your messages while on the net or by phone.

We have tried DialPad.com, one of the Internet phone services. You have to download the software onto a Windows-compatible system and have speakers and a headset with a microphone in order to use it. You call from your computer but the listener uses his or her phone, unlike some of the other services where you just dial computer to computer. In my experience it works okay for short conversations, but the sound does cut out every now and then which can make it difficult to follow the conversation. Plus, there's a slight time delay which can cause a bit of confusion. And lastly, it has a tendency to suddenly terminate the call between five and ten minutes (again, just my experience), so it's not great for extended conversations. I guess it goes with the old adage "you get what you pay for." It's fun and easy if you're looking for free but not a good alternative for important calls. Good luck!

I signed up for and tried the free long distance phone service at www.dialpad.com. Frankly, it was not very good at all! The person receiving my call only heard about one out of every 3 of my words. It was a most frustrating experience. Maybe others have tried this and have had a better experience, but I would not use it again, even though it's free.

We use www.dialpad.com to make our calls. Haven't had any problems and we have used this for a couple of months. You do need a microphone and that can be costly, $50-$100. dollars. I won't realize the savings for awhile because we don't/didn't make a lot of long distance phone calls,

DialPad.com is the best of these Internet phone services. They allow you to call a regular phone from your computer. All the others I have seen only allow pc-to-pc calling (in others words voice chat). I have been using dialpad.com to call my mother, my only long distance call, for months and my long distance bill is now gone. For best results with dialpad.com use a headset, either a phone type headset or my personal choice an inexpensive pair of head phones for a Walkman. Have fun talking and saving.

I installed dialpad.com and it is entirely free for all US calls and it is wonderful. I live in an area where every time I pick up the phone it is long distance and my phone bills have been horrendous for 22 years. I threatened to have the phone service disconnected however this dial pad is great. Just type in dialpad.com and agree on the contract and all your calls in the US will be "free". I love it and the reception is 90% clear and I don't know what I did without it.

Editors Note: We had mixed results of the effectiveness of dialpad.com. This may have to do with the speed of the individuals connection and the number on the system while you are calling.
