Sea-Life Sunglasses

If you're looking for a way to keep the kids busy during the summer vacation, why not try making some sea-life sunglasses. Not only is it a fun activity to do, you'll end up with a really cool accessory to wear on holiday or at a beach party. All you need to make your sunglasses are some basic materials or alternatively, simply decorate a pair of your own glasses using some of the ideas below. Supplies:

  • fun foam
  • tracing paper
  • non-toxic glue
  • sponge
  • acrylic paint
  • scissors
  • a pencil
  • cellophane
  • beads, sequins, etc.
  • thin elastic
  • a hole maker

Instructions:

  1. To make a custom pair of sunglasses, firstly draw a template on paper. You can do this by either drawing around a pair of glasses that fit you or placing a piece of tracing paper across the top of the face and marking eye/nose positions.
  2. Sea-Life Sunglasses - foam frames

  3. When you are happy with your template, mark it onto some foam and carefully cut it out.
  4. Glue on foam shapes of your choice to the frame. I attached two swirling spirals as shown in the photographs.
  5. Use a sponge to apply acrylic paint to the frame. Let dry.
  6. Glue beads, sequins, and sea-life stickers along the frame to decorate.

  8. When completely dry, turn the frame over to the wrong side. Cut two pieces of cellophane as fake lenses and glue them into position.

  10. To finish, make a small hole on either side of the frame and thread some elastic through. Knot either end of the elastic to secure in place. Put your sunglasses on to check the elastic is the correct length and adjust, if necessary.
