Kill Weeds With Black Plastic

To rid your flower bed of all the weeds and wild onions that come up in the spring, simply put black plastic over the ground for about 2 days and then remove it and rake up the dead weeds. It is now ready for planting your flowers. If you prefer, you can also leave plastic and cut circles through it to put plants in. Then no worry over weeds in the summer.

Black plastic will not kill wild onions, it just forces the bulb to grow the shoot in another direction. It will grow again - these are just about indestructible. Roundup for trees, brush, and poison ivy won't even kill wild onions, not even when you cut the tops off and spray it into their stems. Where I live, we have summer drought - the top 18" of soil dries out totally - for months. Still the wild onions come up, year after year. The only way to really get rid of them is to dig their bulbs up, and some are so miniscule, it's hard to get all of them.
