Toy GroupThese dog breeds are characterized by their small size and gentle natures. Dogs in the toy group make good companions, especially for people who live in small apartments or houses in the city because they generally require less exercise and living space.
Working GroupDogs in the working group are often trained for a variety of tasks, including pulling sleds, guarding property and livestock, and performing water and mountain rescues. These breeds are recognized for their intelligence, ability to learn quickly and their alert temperaments.
Non-SportingThese group consists of a diverse number of dogs breeds all with varying personalities and overall appearances. These breeds are generally kept as companions and in some cases, watchdogs, for the home and family.
Herding GroupThis group was created by the American Kennel Club in 1983 to recognize members of the working group that excel at herding and controlling the movement of other animals. Many of these breeds are no longer used for herding and are more often kept as household pets.
Sporting GroupBreeds in this group are bred to work closely with people and are characterized by their responsive natures and high degree of intelligence. These dogs are naturally active and alert and known for their instincts and ability in the water and woods.
Terrier GroupThe Terrier Group is made up of energetic breeds that are characterized by their bold, feisty and inquisitive nature. Dogs in this group were originally bred for hunting and killing rodents and small game and today are kept primarily as companions. Although they range in size, terriers typically have a distinctively bold and engaging personality.
