I need some ideas for a gift for my 2 year old grand daughter's birthday on Thanksgiving Day.

My daughter's birthday is the day after Thanksgiving this year. No need to go overboard with a two year old. She'll probably have more fun with the paper and boxes than the toys.
When my daughter was little, we got a lot of use out of LeapFrog toys. We particularly liked the LeapFrog magnetic fridge toys. We had an older version of this:

And when I gave this to my friend's daughters a few years ago, she said they loved it:

The pieces all stick to the fridge (unless they're carried away, which wasn't a problem in our house), and it occupies the child while the grown up is cooking/cleaning in the kitchen. And the educational part is good, too.
If you planned on spending more than that, maybe just put it into an existing savings account, or start a 529 fund for college. Best of luck, I hope she has a wonderful birthday. (11/19/2009)

My 3 nieces were all 2 years old last Christmas and I gave each of them an assortment of bath toys. Boats, squirt toys, etc. plus bubble bath and a hoodie towel. (11/20/2009)

Board books are really great. Lots of colors and big letters, very simple. Books are my favorite gifts to give. I'm really good now at giving age appropriate books. It's never too early to start a book collection for a child. Best of wishes.

I bought my grand daughter a stuffed dog at Walmart for her 2nd birthday that has different areas on it that if you push it is will say things like hand, foot, I love you, etc. It sings, does ABC's etc. She loves it. (11/21/2009)

I've been a bookworm as long as I can remember, so that was my first thought. Dr Seuss was one of my favorite authors, as was A A Milne. My kids loved "Good Night, Moon" and the Berenstain Bears series. There are hundreds of contemporary titles and authors, though.
However, unless you have a precocious child who takes unusually good care of her things, you might want to consider buying something tough. Do they make books from Tyvek yet? (11/26/2009)
