We recently bought a boxed cake mix for red and blue velvet cake. I made a buttercream frosting for the filling, sides, and shell border. I topped it with stabilized whipped cream. Then covered it in sliced strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. It was the perfect balance of sweet and it was amazing!
The blue and red in the frosting on the sides was actually an accident when I was doing the crumb coat, but I liked it so I left it. :)
