Thrift shopping is one of my favorite ways to save money. Like it or not, we live in a materialistic culture that can be reflected in the stock of any given thrift shop. Every day clothing, furniture, and housewares are donated by those who buy too much for those who can't buy much of anything. As the old saying goes, one person's trash is another person's treasure. The following are some tips to not only make thrift shopping easier and more pleasant, but also help get the most for the least amount of money.

I could not agree more! I live by this philosophy and enjoy life so much more!
You are so very right! I was introduced to Thrift and Consignment Stores about a year ago from a new girlfriend who also showed me around yard sales for the first time. Let me just say this; "I WILL NEVER PAY FULL PRICE AGAIN FOR ANYTHING."
Absolutely have the thrift shopping down to a science and love it. I have furnished an decorated our home, a 1600+ sq ft home, for around $450.
For those people who are squeamish about buying "dirty" clothing from a thrift store, think about how many people have tried on the garments before you at your favorite retail store. In addition, I heard on the radio that all clothing and linens should be placed in a hot dryer for 20 minutes, regardless of where you bought them, to kill bedbugs.
I agree. I'm not one to try on clothes in any store. I've worked in retail too long to, lol.
When you think about it, we sleep on used sheets, towels and washcloths in Motels and hospitals. We eat from dishes that many people used in a restaurant.
i tried to explain this to a friend that refuses to buy used...i explained the whole concept that resturants reuse dishes, motel are known for dirty sheets, and you never know who, what or when they have been tried on or returned...we agreed to disagree.
Many of the clothes I end up buying still have their original price tags and stickers on them too!
My daughter and I went to 20 thrift stores in 5 days in Reno, NV when I was up there to visit the family. We always get amazing bargains, but are careful about what we pick up.
I see this article is from 2016. In the past year 2020 online thrifting became huge! I have used Poshmark since 2018 and started my own shop there in 2020.
I appreciate Poshmark! Backstory: i happened upon a pair of black Hushpuppy Jelly sandals on clearance at DSW. Didnt wear them for a month. When I did, I feel in love; it was like walking on a cloud. Unfortunately, no one had had the grey and none had the style for less than $60. Found them on Poshmark, in my size, for $10 plus shipping!!!!
If you aren't handy with a sewing machine and have a good cleaners near, ask about their alterations. Most have it available. I work the front counter at one in a small town and have convinced my customers if it's something they really like, don't discard it until they check with us . One lady started bringing her husband and son's hunting coats and overalls to replace zippers. Saves a. Lot of money.
