My 8 year old periodically has poohed and urinated indoors and for no reason. Recently he has been doing it more often. Nothing has changed to cause this. My husband hates it, and he thinks I'm OK with it, but I'm not. It's nasty. Duke is trained to go outside or in the garage in his dog litter pan (mainly on rainy days). He has been doing it indoors very frequently lately, and I'm tired of it.
Any suggestion to help with this problem and ideas as to the reason? He knows it's wrong, because he goes and gets in his bed and ducks his head. There is no reason for this, and he does not do it all the time, just randomly and more frequently than in the past. He'll also, very rarely, lift his leg and urinate right in front of us.
Please help.
Thank-You

You say nothing has changed, but likely something has. For instance, if a dominant and intact male dog has moved into your neighborhood, he knows. You may not know about it but be assured he does.
First, how much exercise is he getting? Yorkies are such small dogs that many feel they're fine in the house all day. In reality, a Yorkie requires about 45 minutes walking each day, in one walk or split up into two.
This accomplishes two things: It releases pent up energy and it allows dogs to mark their territory, which increases their confidence level.
Be sure also that you are not feeding too much food or too much bulk for his size. If he is pooping more than twice a day he is probably getting either too much food, a food that has too many cheap fillers in it, or possibly both.
I would also suggest shampooing the carpet with an enzymatic pet odor removing carpet shampoo, in case the scent is triggering an instinctual response to go there.
Remind your husband that when a dog senses his humans are angry with him this will increase stress and stress-related behaviors, like peeing and pooping. So it's better to try and stay calm.
