I am going to have to purchase a new washer soon, as mine is on it's last leg. It makes a horrible clunking sound when it changes gears to rinse and spin dry. Any advise on purchasing a new washer would be appreciated. I do not need a big fancy one as I'm widowed and it's just me. Please tell me what brand you have and why or why you do not like it. Thank you.

Why spend more money than you really have to? My husband and I recently purchased a second hand Kenmore Washer and Dryer from a used appliance store. The washer and dryer are only 3 years old and look brand new.
Kenmore Washer - $200
Kenmore Dryer - $175
Delivery $40
$415.00 was the entire bill and I have a 90-day warranty on both.
A new washer is going to cost you at least $400+.
Check the telephone book yellow pages and look for Appliances-used.
I have a Maytag Neptune front load washer. They are expensive. It works well. I make sure to wipe inside the door and inner gasket after every wash. Only thing I don't like is they jump around a lot in the spin cycle.
Washers at Sears with the brand name Kenmore are good and low cost and come with a warranty. I would buy one of these. Used appliances can come with a lot of problems and you may have to spend money on to repair. After all the previous owners got rid of them for some reason.
I live in Toledo and just got a new washer last year at Appliance Center in Maumee. I bought a Hotpoint because it wasn't very expensive and I really like it. It is very quiet and has all the settings I need. The salespeople are very nice and are knowledgeable and can answer any questions you have. The store has a great selection of washers and any other appliance you may need.
I bought it one day they delivered the next day and they hooked it up and tested it before they left. I paid a little extra and they took the old one with them so I didn't have to deal with it.
Consumer Reports Magazine recently tested washers.
One that they highly recommend is the Maytag
model # MTW5800T(W) at $500.00.
Maytag was bought out years ago, I think by Whirlpool. We bought one of the last Maytag front load washers and it was horrible as it would grow black mold all through the machine. We only had the machine a few years and had to get rid of it.
We bought the high end LG front loader, Consumer Reports highest rated machine at the time. The LG is better than the Maytag but we have to keep the door and tray open all the time or it will smell. We also have to run an empty load with dish washer detergent about once a month. So, I would not recommend a front load washer.
We purchased a Kenmore 90 Series washer approximately three years ago. It is the worse washer we've ever owned (so far)! My roommate has had to replace the coupler two times already (in that short time frame) and it sounds like it's ready to go out again....exactly like the sounds you are describing in your request for washer advice. If I were you I certainly would not purchase a Kenmore washer. I do not know the best on the market these days but, with the experience we've had with this one, I would certainly try another brand.
We got our washer and dryer when my son's first marriage disolved. It was a Kenmore washer and dryer, it is now almost 20 years old and still going strong.
Well, I can't really give you any advice about a washer, but if you want to get a better deal, go to http://www.mrrebates.com. I ordered a dishwasher from Sears by going through mrrebate.com and got a really good deal using a coupon code on a machine that was already on sale. There are several other coupon codes available for Sears, though. There may be other appliance stores you can order from through mrrebates.com also. Good luck finding a good washing machine.
I prefer Kenmore, have had other brands in the past, but prefer Kenmore. I also prefer the type with just plain twisting knobs, that have been around for years.
To Terri who recommended Appliance Center. I live in your area and I would NEVER shop at Appliance Center. It used to be a great store when the father owned it, but since the kids took over, they don't give a darn about their customers. I have 2 friends who bought very, very expensive appliance there. One an oven an the other friend a refrigerator. The one who bought the oven had the glass implode and was told "sorry, you'll have to deal with the manufacturer. Same thing with the one who bought the refrigerator. Major problems with it shortly after she bought it and they ignored her. But thank you for the tip anyway.
