It still amazes me how many people catch themselves without food during bad weather. Growing up, even though our family was low income, my mother always made sure she had extra food for storms, power outage, etc. When we would hear the bread and milk rush, when snow was mentioned, she would always say, "Do people wait until their cupboards are bare before going to the grocery store?"
We also had a garden in the summer, so mother canned and froze vegetables; she would also buy some extra at the store, like meat that she could cook and freeze for meals. I don't have time for a garden, but always make sure that my husband and I have food for times like these. Buy extra frozen goods, and especially canned goods; we also always have plenty of peanut butter and crackers. Some brands of wheat bread, especially honey wheat, freeze very well.

Good tips:) Be sure to add the following to your emergency stores - a hand powered can opener, and a small portable BBQ grill and charcoal briquettes to cook that food (if the power goes out you will be SO glad to have a warm meal!) but NEVER cook on that grill in the house or garage, a sun porch, or carport!
And be sure you have spare water for drinking+to clean up after. Stainless steel pots, cast iron dutch ovens, tin foil will all 'cook' beautifully on a grill but it's nice to have the ability to clean up after even if it's just a wipe and a rinse. That spare water can also boil up for a cuppa instant coffee or a nice mug of tea - bliss in an emergency!
I learned the above whilst living along the US Gulf of Mexico and NW GA during several power outages from hurricanes and ice storms.
I think this is good but me and some of my friends go and buy food that does not need cooking like sandwich meats in case we lose power. You can always fix a sandwich and eat beanie weenies and of course fruit when you have no power.
