How do I get rid of ants in dishwasher?

Ants in Dishwasher

My parents had this problem one year and no matter what they did the ants were still there. Finally my dad took the panel off the inside of the door and wow. The door is lined with cardboard and insulation. The ants had made a huge nest inside the cardboard and there were thousands. He ended up cleaning out, then spraying the inside of the door panel and replacing the cardboard. Hope it helps. (07/08/2009)

Every few years I get carpenter ants in the kitchen. They may come in from under the dishwasher or some other place. I call an exterminator and he sprays areas in the basement and on the outside of the foundation. In a day or two they are all gone. The ants carry the material the exterminator uses back to the nest. The ants in the nest eat the material and they all die. (07/08/2009)

Ok, I am getting teeny Pharoah Ants in my dishwasher.
They started (I think) around my microwave area. I put a borax, honey and peanut butter bait out, and theyve made this into a home with holes in and out of the mound. It has since hardened and full of ants still alive.

I noticed them 2 weeks ago in my dog food which is at the front of my house in my hallway closet, so I bought a sealable container for that and they appear to be gone from that spot.
But now finding them in the dishwasher, and still around the microwave area. The borax mix doesnt seem to be working.

Twice in almost 20 years, I've had ants in the kitchen (and in the dishwasher). The last time we had them visit, were losing so much water "under the house" from a broken main water line and didn't know it, until we saw our water bill was 6x what it always is, but the ants knew, and came up for air into the kitchen. Talk about a disaster in every way!

Whether it's wet and raining outside, or whatever is happening, the ants get on the move, or they smell food, and they can anywhere, even in the dishwasher if there's icky dishes inside the dishwasher that haven't been run yet.

I used (both times) Ajax liquid dish soap, the orange colored one, and I squirted a line around the base of the floor and in front of the
dishwasher too. It makes a nice "liquid soap line" that doesn't spread out, and it stays put for 2 days before it dries out.
The "only" pain is, after the ants realize there's no getting in anything because of the line of Ajax dish soap, they all leave, but...you'll have the mess of cleaning up all that soap. One thing for sure is, your floors will not be cleaner! hahaha I say that only because when cleaning up that semi dried soap line all around your kitchen, you've got to use a wet rag, and pretty soon, the whole floor ends up getting super washed, but...it's not too bad. The ants are worse. :)

Also run the dishwasher (with only a couple of *drops*) of dish soap as that will suds up and come out the front if you use more than a few drops.

The ants seem to hate the smell of that dish soap, and it's actually a pleasant orange fragrance.

I'd tried everything the first time we'd gotten ants, but the Ajax Orange Scented Dish soap has worked both times and fast too.
The ants just don't like it, and go away.
