Cream together shortening and sugar. Add eggs and mix well. Sift together dry ingredients and gradually add to mixture. Stir until well mixed and add applesauce and nuts.
This is a healthy snack or breakfast item. I substituted flaxseed meal for the wheat germ and used Truvia for the brown sugar. I also used craisins for a bit of color this holiday season. Due to allergies in the family I left out the nuts.
