I have had black snakes in my shed, as evidenced by many skins found in the spring, as well as seeing one. The problem now is that I have moved my dog beds, food and water to the shed for the winter season (4 dogs). I am afraid the snakes may bite my dogs if they come around for the food and water. I live in WV. My shed has insulation, where the snakes seem to hide. Thanks!

Snakes will usually not attack any person or animal unless they are threatened or actually attacked. Your black snakes are probably rat snakes-about 6.5-7 feet. They are not venomous and always hibernate all winter, starting very soon in your area. Your dogs and snakes will usually avoid each other and rarely come into actual contact so a snake bite would be rare.
As winter is bearing down and the snakes have probably started hibernating, your dogs should not have any problems in the shed. Come spring, however, you should relocate their food, etc. Below is an article by the very helpful "e-how" site about how to remove snakes from your house and yard. Please do not harm the snakes as they are just living their lives as they have for millions of years.

I am not a proponent of leaving dogs outside in the winter. Isn't there a place inside where they can be warm and tended to? Dogs who are left outside often bark all day for lack of companionship.
It is not as bad as you may think. I have 5 dogs. The shed outside is insulated, and has electric run to it, therefore, they have heat, all have beds. I have a thermostat in there which shows the temp, just like a house. I am not worried about warmth, just possible snakes.
God bless you for taking care great of your pets. I'm fostering Miniature Pinscher Poodles. They have a nice insulated home in my back store house. They have a large yard to play in, and they get plenty of exercise. The first 2 1/2 years of their life they lived in my home. That was a lot of work. They are doing great!
You shouldnt have a dog if you cant keep your dog in the house and especially in the winter. Dogs are people persons.
Your comment is rude! When I lived in South Carolina I ran a very busy animal rescue and I converted one of my buildings into a doggy condo. I had an automatic solar light, heat, air conditioning and a doggie door that they can go in and out of. I was with them most of the time but when I had to leave I had a sitter come in.
Rat snakes are constrictors meaning they can crush they prey. People that say they are harmless are not well informed. A fellow told me the other day he caught one, was holding it behind its head and it wrapped around his arm causing his hand to turn purple. Harmless? Sure
Moth balls around the perimeter of your house. Keeps all snakes away they won't cross the scent of the moth balls. Just don't let your dogs get a hold of the moth balls
Sorry not sure what part of the world u live n but Im n Va & I can tell u first hand that moth balls, snake away, sulfur & many other things sold for snake prevention r useless!!!! Ive seen snakes slither right thru sulfur & moth balls!!! When snake away first came to the market it did actually work but not anymore!!! Not here anyways! And for the person that basically told someone that they arent a good pet parent because the dogs r outside u really need to get a grip!
