Divorce is hard for all involved but the most affected are the children. If you have a child who has a disability, then ask for the appropriate type of child support.
If you have children with disabilities who will not get better, ask for lifetime child support for supplements, doctor's visits, special foods, etc. Lifetime child support means that the judge orders child support for the life of the child. This will mean that when the child reaches the age of 18, the spouse will not cease paying child support.

Another way to look at it is if when the disabled child gets to the age 18, if the spouse has the right kind of lawyer, he can still be released from paying additional child support. When I got divorced my ex suggested that it would be in our papers that he would continue to pay child support until or if our daughter could ever take care of herself. That ended by the time she was 19. However, another way to look at it is if the child is on disability, the amount of disability will be increased if the adult child is no longer receiving child support.
The disabled child can also draw a check from Social Security. You as the caregiver can also draw Social Security for taking care of him/her.Social Security wont be forthcoming with this info.
