The best way is directly. Ask him yourself; don't ask a friend to do it for you. Try to get him when he is by himself, smile, and ask him if he'd like to accompany you. I'll bet he says yes!
One line a friend uses is to walk up to the guy she is interested in, tilts her head and smiles coyly, and then asks him if he'd like to get married or would he rather go on a date with her to whatever event is appropriate for the moment -- like in a bar, she saunters sweetly up to him, smiles and says, "Would like to get married or would you rather just dance with me?" First of all, I'd ask him if he is going to the formal; if he is already booked then you both need not be embarrassed by a refusal. Be interested in his response, and say you haven't quite decided yet whom to ask. A little white lie can save face.
