It is that time of year when I get the wonderful spring fever and want to start growing things. Here are a batch of avocado pits sitting in their own pods made from foam egg crates. I keep them in a waterproof little box in a dark cabinet and check on the water level every day. We eat tons of avocados due to the healthy fat that is in them. We have found our daughter really benefits from a Paleo type diet so I have tons.
I am going to germinate them by the dozens. I don't like the toothpick method until later after the bottom large part of the pit cracks and the tap root can be seen.
These will only be houseplants, they are beautiful but they won't, more than likely, bear fruit. I love them and find it helps them to be talked too, even in the pit stage.

Hahaha... I can't bear to throw away those beautiful pits either so I have avocados in various stages of growth all around MY house as well! I would still cut an X in the bottom portion of them since they are sooo tough!
Good Luck with yours!
:D
Just now I checked the pits, emptied out the egg crate water and inspected each one. I found this one with a tap root, put three toothpicks in very slightly.
