There is a bad smell in my kitchen that I notice only occasionally. It occurs mostly when we turn the AC off. It seems to come from the area where the sink and counter and refrigerator are. It's a stale smell, almost like bad breath. It doesn't seem to rest on any surface; it's just in the air. We thought it might be dog hair collecting under or behind the fridge, but after cleaning that, it didn't really make a difference. We have granite countertops and granite on the backsplash. Could that somehow be collecting moisture? And smelling? We just don't know.

You may want to have a mold check to see if is in the walls. The AC could be keeping the area dry and when it is off the smell happens when the mold is damp again. A good home inspector can check for mold. It can be an expensive fix, but safely first!
Fortunately, there are several very good mold tests that are inexpensive but are still highly rated. These kits are sold at stores like Walmart, Target, Lowe's, Home Depot and Ace or True Value Hardware stores as well as online.
There are many different kind but you could start with one type to see if that is your problem. You do need to rule out mold as it can be very bad for your health to live where mold is growing.
Here is a sample of the different types of kits but be sure to read everything before purchasing as some have a source you can mail in your samples for a lab review to determine what type of mold you have (fee is $45) but you may not need that.

There are several good sites that can help you maybe determine if you are having any symptoms of mold spores being in your house.
You may have mold in the air conditioner. Have you changed or cleaned the filter?
