How effective is the Bissell Little Green Machine Model: 1400D on upholstery and carpet that has not been cleaned in a long time.

I have owned one for about 4 years, and only find it does small jobs (stains) but, it seems I am forever repairing it. I keep it handy, but know each use I will find another small repair job. So far, I have been able to repair all problems!
