Black Snakes and Small Dogs?

We have black snakes in our yard from a nearby wooded area. If one were to bite our 11# poodle, what would happen? I fear it would be difficult to keep them away due to the woods.

Where do you live? That would help us identify the type of snakes that are in your area. Garter snakes are black with a stripe and harmless. They are very common in many parts of the U.S. There are also rat snakes and racers, which are also black. They are also not venomous, although a bite could be painful and get infected. Snakes would probably avoid your dog and scurry back to the woods rather than act aggressively.

As a general rule, 'black' snakes are easily 'frightened' and usually run away (and they are fast!).
Your dogs will most likely just bark and the snake will disappear.

You can ask for professional advice if you contact your local extension office: They will know what type of snake you have in your area. Better to know for sure - before rather than later.
