Bleaching a Polyester Vest Before Dyeing?

Bleaching a Polyester Vest Before Dyeing - vestI have a dark blue/black vest that I want to bleach so I can turn it brown. It is 78% polyester, 19% rayon, and 3% spandex. Any opinions out there if this would work at all or just ruin the vest?

I think you have figured out the best solution to repair the vest your have ruined.

  1. Do not pour bleach directly on the vest to bleach it.
  2. Mix 1 cup of bleach with a quart of water.
  3. Soak this in the solution for 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Immediately remove from the solution and wash in the machine.
  5. If the color is still too dark, soak it again and wash it.
  6. Once you have reached your desired color, you can now dye the vest.

The lining is the problem here. It Is not meant to get wet. You can remove the lining and try to bleach.

I cant guarantee the fabric wont shrink and the lining will have to be trimmed to make it fit again.
