Bleach is very unpredictable. If you don't mind losing the shirt if it fails, you can try it, but I can tell you from personal experience rayon is tricky and you could end up with white splotches and an uneven look. If you asked about cotton, I would so go for it. I have had good luck bleaching cottons, but any other fabric (unless I am doing bleach tie dye--which is super fun) bleach is a no go!

Bleach will destroy the fibers of the rayon. Dont do it.

Hi,
I would not use bleach on rayon at all because it will ruin the fabric, in my opinion.
Blessings,

Thanks for your comments. After reading as much as I could find on whitening rayon, I added 1/2 cup Clorox to 2 gallons of water, poured it in my kitchen sink, and proceeded to soaked my new off white 100% rayon skirt for 8-10 min. It worked great! Didnt go bright white, but white enough to make me happy.

Using bleach on any type of material is always a controversial subject as using bleach on anything may present multiple problems and may or may not do what you want it to do.
- When speaking of rayon it is necessary to define what type of rayon an item is made of before you can try to determine whether you can bleach or dye it.
- First: Is your shirt made of 100% rayon or does it have a % of polyester? If it has any percent of another material then bleach will only ruin it.
- Second: Is your rayon washable? Does the label say it is washable or does it say - Dry Clean Only (as most rayon does). Have you washed it successfully?
- If you washed it - did it shrink or turn out really nice? If you have not tried washing it then that would be the first step to take as most new clothing has "sizing" in the material (that is what gives it that "new" feeling) and sizing is really a coating and would affect the outcome of anything you do to the material.
- If you were to try bleaching rayon, you need to follow specific instruction but only after you have washed and dried it successfully.
- When trying something new it is always best to checkout what others are saying and learn by their mistakes. I did find several articles about rayon that could be beneficial unless you just want to jump right in and maybe be satisfied if it goes bad.
- Here is an article about removing color with Rit Color Remover but I'm not sure about using hot water with rayon (although the article says it is okay). There is a contact link on this page that you might contact for further information.
- You should know that almost nothing will make a factory colored garment completely "snow" white and may remove the color but leave a garment a "dingy" white.
- I would suggest buying a nice white shirt and maybe not one out of such a difficult material as rayon.
