I have a philodendron that is over 40 years old. I noticed the top of the plant pot has brown sticky stuff on it it. How do I get rid of it and what is it? The plant has new leaves and is in a huge pot. I have not seen any bugs or white fungus.

Are you saying the sticky stuff is on top of the soil? or on leaves at top of pot? Or?
Anyway, you should try to remove as much of the sticky stuff as possible. I have listed a couple of links that may offer some helpful suggestions but the best defense is Insecticidal Soap. You can buy this (or Neem oil) at any garden center or I have a link that has directions on how to make your own soap for plants.

It almost sounds like you are describing the pot your plant sits in. If the pot has some sort of fungus on the plastic you should spay this with a mixture of dishing washing soap and water. Mix the two ingredients together in a spray bottle.
I would spray with insecticidal soap anyway. It can't hurt
