Any change in a dogs skin, especially if it is making him uncomfortable, should be checked by a vet.
He needs to see a Vet right away.

To help your vet, be sure to make note of anything that has changed in the past few days...like did his food change? was there more pollen than usual? did you notice ticks on him? have you seen a lot of spiders or other bugs around? did he maybe get into something...like a thorn bush or step into a ground wasp nest?
If you have a "cone of shame" (those plastic lampshade like things they give dogs who have had a recent procedure) you may want to use it proactively until you can get him in to see the vet just so he doesn't make it worse. Just a thought! Get well soon pup!!!
