I set my curling iron down on the bathroom countertop for a short period of time, and when I returned I found that it had burned the countertop. Does anyone know how I may be able to remove the burn stain?

If it's truly porcelain (same as the toilet) it should rub off with some baking soda. If the countertop is some other material, the baking soda may scratch it or dull the finish, but might still be better than a scorch mark. Did you try something that degreases? Scrubbing bubbles? Depending on the material that the countertop is made from, there are different techniques to try.

If it is laminated, try baking soda or toothpaste by gently rubbing the area. Another great product is Barkeeper's Friend, found in the cleanser section in Wal-mart. But with whatever you use, rub gently.

I came across this forum in a grave emergency to remove the burn stain on the white counter-top (It's white, I don't know if it's porcelain) of the house I'm renting with a burning Nag Champa incent that I had forgotten about (Oh, they take my mind away from my problems alright).
I first tried scrubbing the stain with a dry rag and Fresh Mint Colgate (that's my favorite flavor) and the stain didn't seem to budge (makes me worry about if it's cleaning my teeth!).
Plan B was to try scraping it hard with a pair of pointed tweezers, but I thought about beanygurl's comment, "(it may) scratch it or dull the finish, but might still be better than a scorch mark" and I changed my mind.
So Plan C was Baking soda, but I don't have any in the house (is that bad?), so I improvised and used a quarter of a single Alka Seltzer tablet (Extra Strength for Fast Relief! Haha!) and I began softly scrubbing the stain occasionally dipping the tip of the Alka Selter corner into the water drops around the inside of the sink. In 2-5 minutes I saw instant results and I don't see any scratches! I truly couldn't ask for more.

I did the same thing. AGAIN, but also w/nicotine mark on counter. I used a little bit of Old Dutch w/liquid Bar Keepers Friend. Both came up w/o effort in a matter of two minutes. No scratches, Phew! (11/26/2007)

I just finished working on an identical stain on my Corian countertop. Tried the salt, and the baking soda, but no help. Not having any sandpaper, I got a very fine nail file, and wet the stain, and the file, and sanded the mark in a circular motion. You need to keep the file, and the counter wet, and use gentle pressure. It takes a little time, but it works! (02/08/2008)

I had a match burn mark in my porcelain sink. Didn't know what to do so I left it like that for months. :( After reading feedback here on using baking soda, I tried it today. Wet the sink base, sprinkled baking soda generously over the mark, let is soak for a minute. Took a scratch-free scrub pad (the type you use to clean a glass top stove) and scrubbed for approx 4-5 minutes.

I had a burn this afternoon on the counter in the apartment I'm living in and was extremely nervous I would completely lost my deposit. I had some fun with this. Well, not fun exactly, but did some experimenting. I left my straightener on and it made two burns on the counter almost 'exactly' like the picture above. I mixed together comet, toothpaste, and bam and let it soak for about 3 minutes. Then, I grabbed a toothbrush and SCRUBBED. It was a good workout. The stain isn't completely gone, but its hard to notice. I think I'm the only one that sees it anymore. (06/04/2008)
