My buttonhole foot won't make buttonholes. I put on the button presser foot attachment (place my button on the back). I pull down the button lever, but I can not push it backwards.

I'm not familiar with Singer 4423 but usually the manual provides very detailed instructions but I know that I do not always follow every step that is provided in the manuals.
If you have rechecked every step (or do not have your manual) then I feel sure you will find an answer on one of these sites: This seems to be a very common problem with this machine which means to me that your buttonhole maker may not work in the same manner as most other machines so please read 'solutions' offered carefully.

This could be as simply as a build up of debris in the housing of your machine. Over time your machine collects string, fabric, and lint, that causes your machine to malfunction. Clean out the area and try again. If that does not work , try this link for trouble shooting- www.justanswer.com/
