Can I Use Rice Hulls for Bedding?

I was given rice hulls and was really curious if I could use them in all my dog kennels for their bedding.

This is a very bad idea and normally the rice hulls are used for building material, insulation, fertilizers, or even used to make fuel. Some farmers use these in the horse's stalls with straw or hay over the top of it.

Around the home, the best use for these is in your garden. It is a proven fact that rice hulls mixed with soil in your garden help to prevent weeds. They are very lightweight which makes them the perfect component to mix with your soil to make your soil light and airy. This helps your plants to draw in more oxygen and promotes growth.

I would not for a number of reasons. The first being they are almost impossible to clean after they get wet and you will end up with a big stinky mess if your dog has an accident in his/her bed.

Some people use them for horses and mice (yes, strange combination) but it is because they are cheap and can be easily disposed of.

A dog bed is something that should last which is why I say no.

This is not recommended for dogs, it can be rough, and when getting wet it stays wet, also when dry there is a lot of breathable particles, it's not good for a dogs fur, skin, and general health , etc. This works better with horses , ducks, and chickens. -www.backyardchickens.com/.../

Seems rice hulls are used mostly with horses and most of the time it is used under their regular hay - more as a cushion than a bed.
It looks like it may work for chickens and ducks but none of these have sensitive skin and do not mind a little 'lingering' water as the users say it is slow to absorb water (runs to the bottom) but is difficult to dry out the area.

Perhaps you could find ways to use the rice hulls in your yard or garden as it can be mixed with potting soil and acts similar to perlite in the mix. You can also add it to your compost bin.
