I have a Singer Featherweight II. A needle broke, the bobbin was probably incorrectly placed, and I think it was inside the machine. However, I shook it and turned it over and around and I think it fell out. I no longer hear anything rattling. I took the cover off the machine "head" and played around, then put a needle back in. The shaft that the needle fits on had gotten raised and I can't lower it. The needle is way too high. How can I lower the shaft? I have a sense that if I can get the shaft lowered, the machine will function.
Thanks for whatever ideas.

Check your user manual pages for 'troubleshooting' and also the section on changing needles. In case you've misplaced your user manual, here's a link to the Singer website free download:

It sounds as though your stray needle bit has lodged itself inside your machine - your having removed the head cover may have invalidated whatever warranty you may have on the machine but it would still be worth taking the machine to a factory authorised service centre to have it checked. They're trained, have the correct tools, and can 'see' things the average home sewer can't.
