When traveling long distance with children, keep them entertained by playing car baseball and the ride will go smooth.
Give one child a pad and pencil, usually the oldest to keep score. When a car passes they have to look and see what the last number is on the license plate. (Example: 6LUV121). If the last number is a one then the first child goes to first base, if it is a 2 then that child goes to second base, a three they go to third base if it is a 4 they have hit a home run. Every other number is an out. Three outs and the the inning is over for that child and the next child goes. This is continued until there are nine innings.
Keeping a pad and pencil will help them keep score and see who won the game. They can also name their teams if they have a favorite baseball team.
My five children had a ball with this game and it kept them well occupied while traveling with them for 10,000 miles.
