Caring for a Puppy With Parvo?

I have a 2 month old Shih Tzu puppy. He was just recently diagnosed with parvovirus. We rushed him to the vet after the first time he vomited. He has been administered with treatment which is near completion. Also at home we administer him Sucralpet and Augmentin medicines. It's the 3rd day now and he has shown steady progress (as suggested by the vet). He wasn't vaccinated by the breeder.

I have a few questions
1. How long will it take for him to recover completely?
2. What are the chances of him falling prey to parvovirus again?
3. What precautions should be taken to clear the house and our surroundings of any parvovirus traces?

You are so fortunate to have recognized how serious the vomiting was and carried him to start his treatment immediately.

  • I can understand that you have questions and this is good time to seek answers.
  • Questions:
  • 1). I believe the vets say recovery time is up to 10 days but that does not mean your puppy will have his full energy back but it does mean he may be able to go back to most of his former routine.

  • 2). Once your puppy has had Parvo he will be immune but your vet will tell you what shots/vaccinations he still needs.
  • 3). Clean up is a very big job as this virus can hang around for up to 1 year (and even longer sometimes) especially in the yard area where the puppy may have been.
  • Although your puppy will be immune the virus could still be active if another vulnerable dog should visit the area.
  • Your recovering dog is infectious to other non-vaccinated dogs for a month or so.
  • It is recommended that you throw away (bag it and place in garbage) as much of the household items that your puppy may have been in contact with - especially his bedding.
  • Usually a bleach solution is recommended for cleaning the floors and anything else that can be safely cleaned with bleach. Hot water should be used with bleach if possible for anything that is washable and you wish to keep.

  • One part of ordinary household bleach, diluted with 20-32 parts tap water (4 ounces of bleach to a gallon of water) will inactivate (kill) parvovirus.
  • I think you should read some of the instructions from some of the better web sites that give very detailed instructions on clean up in the house as well as in the yard.
  • This web site has the answer to almost any question that comes up about parvo but it is a long read so click on the questions to see the information you would like to read.

  • Here are a couple of other links that have good information about feeding and caring for your puppy during this recovery period.
  • pethelpful.com/.../parvo-symptoms-and-treatment
  • pethelpful.com/.../If-Your-Puppy-Has-Parvo
  • Vets all say that attention and love will make a big difference in how quickly a puppy will recover so give him an extra hug from all of us.

Parvo can take several weeks to recover from. Keep your vet informed about any setbacks and follow his or her advice.

Prayers for your pup!! So glad he is making stead progress! Here's to a full recovery!! Just keep following the vet's directions!!

As for your questions, your vet can give you the best answers based on your situation and for clean up, what works best in your area.

There is a ton of info out on the internet that addresses your questions, but frankly, most of it is either wrong or incomplete or would work if you lived in the same place as the writer (for the clean up).

For my fur kids safety, I only follow their vet's advice! I believe in this 100% because my Carmel Ann lived to a ripe old age of 17 1/2 under the care of her vet. She had excellent quality of life until the day she crossed the rainbow bridge!

G-d bless you and your fur child! Prayers will continue! Let me know how it goes!
