Caring for a Puppy with Parvo?

My 9 month old Rotti is on day 6 with parvo and treatment. Last night and today he just wants to sleep; is that normal?

Just like people, some animals can react to treatment faster than others and some slower. Continue to monitor for vomiting/diarrhea and weakness. If the puppy seems extremely lethargic (worse than you have seen so far), go back in to see the vet as soon as you can. It is not abnormal for them to be somewhat tired while they are fighting this off.

Here is some information about Parvo.

  1. If you are worried about the dog sleeping and not having any energy this is normal when a dog is sick. However, I would call the vet to make sure there is nothing wrong and you don't need to take him back.

  3. This website offers some excellent information on Parvo and what you can expect if your dog has this virus. I would read this and find out all you can about the virus and what to expect. pets.webmd.com/.../parvo-parvovirus-dogs#1
  4. This is another excellent site that tells you how to treat Parvo in dogs. It has some great information and explains the treatment. www.petmd.com/.../how-treat-parvo
  5. This is yet another site that offers help and assistance over the phone. They are there to answer your questions about Parvo and to help you out. www.1800petmeds.com/.../parvovirus-treatment-dogs-30.htm

There are many online websites dedicated to Parvo, questions, answers, and treatment. I would check a few of them out and read the information.

If you are worried and the dog is sleeping and not active I would call your vet.

If the dog is still throwing up or is still sick with the run or you see blood in his poop call the vet immediately and take him back in.

At day one, yes that is normal. It can take a week to see noticeable change in mood with proper care and about a month to see full results. If nothing changes, go back to the vet. Good luck!
