Caring for a Puppy with Parvo?

My dog is 7 months old. She was around a dog that had parvo, but I didn't know. She has been sick for almost a week, she hasn't stopped drinking water, but she hasn't eaten. I have been forcing chicken broth and Pedialyte trying to keep her hydrated. I have also been letting her rest. What else can I do help her get the nutrition that she needs to get better until she starts eating again?

It takes time to recover from parvo. Your dog is drinking, so that is good. Follow your vets advice.

I say you are doing all the right things. Some ppl give their dogs Pepto Bismol to help protect their gut during this trying process. The main thing as you say is to keep it hydrated and broth provides nutrients. Animals in general tend to underreat/fast because that unleashes the healing mechanism www.fredericpatenaude.com/.../fasting.html

Have you talked to the vet to see if there is a true diagnosis or to make sure something else isn't going on? If it is truly parvo, the vet may have other or additional protocols to get your pup to a full recovery! Lots of healing wishes and prayers for you and the pup!

Just follow the treatment the vet has given you. I know it is hard and my vet told me that the dog has enough stored fat that they can be fine for a few days without eating. I had to watch one dog not eat for 8 days and then one night he was up and moving around.

I tried giving him some pasta and rice and he slowly ate it down. The vet told me to keep him on this diet for a few more days. My dog loved it so much that was all he ended up eat was pasta or rice mixed with his other food.

Be sure you dog has been checked by a Vet. They have medications that can save your dogs life. What you are doing is good supportive care, but with parvo you need to do everything possible. It is a good sign your dog is drinking on her own. Often they stop eating and drinking. Your Vet can work with you because they often need antibiotics too. Vets understand people often cannot afford full time hospital care for puppies with parvo.
