I think I may have killed my umbrella tree by overwatering it. It has totally turned dark. If I leave it will it come back?

First off if this is in a pot you should have it planted in a moss-base potting soil. If you don't then it needs to be changed out. With this type of soil, it makes it a lot easier to take care of the plant. You will only need to water this plant when the top soil is dry. This is a type of plant that does well with dry soil and does not do well with overwatering. You should be able to bring it back by changing out your soil and watering it only when the topsoil is very dry.
I fear its too late for this! Your answer is also above my head! Im just starting to grow plants and I have no idea what cutting back is, moss-based etc means. I go to the Dollar Tree and buy a bag of potting soil and transplant a plant that I found in the garbage room to try to save it life.
I would cut it back (look for the bumps on the stem and cut above the bumps). The bumps are places where there is growth so if you cut above it, it should come back.
They are a fairly hearty plant.

and its only a baby with one stick about a yard tall. Its planted in potting soil and was doing great. I was watering it barely, but I was watering it with banana water, (water that was made with banana skins). when I became depressed and all my plants started to suffer.
Only water if it seems dry. There is a good chance you will get new growth.
