I found a broken child's rocking horse discarded on the curb for trash pick up. This is how I gave new life to an old horse.
Approximate Time: 1 week, on and off
This horse came from the older style rocking horse set with springs that the child rocks back and forth on. I didn't know how I was going to transform it into a carousal horse, I just knew I wanted to try it.
Keep your mind open to items others discard. It's true that one man's junk is another's treasure!

Beautiful job!
I love Carousel Horses. This one is so very pretty. How lucky you were to find it. Great job repainting and making it into a beautiful work of art.
Thank you maphisx7 and MCW!!! I was thrilled I figured it out and happy with the results. It's amazing what one can do when they are determined to find a way!
You certainly did a great job Mary. This looks just as professional as anything I've ever seen. Really beautiful.
A big Thumbs Up for you and thanks for sharing with us.

How creative to think of re-purposing a child's rocking horse into a carousel horse! Did you paint the horse? If so, what did you use? Is it a drapery rod that you used for the pole? How did you secure it into the planter? Again, thanks for sharing a lovely way to keep something out of the landfills and into something useful and beautiful!
Mary, I am sorry, I see you have all the info I was asking about in your article! I guess I was so enthralled with the horse, I forgot to read what you wrote! Thanks so much for sharing!
What a great idea! Now I'll probably never see one of these at the curb again, now that I know what to do with it! LOL! Thanks!
Thank you all for your feedbacks. Hope someone comes across one of these and gives it a try. Would love to see it!
You did a beautiful job! You must give yourself a pat on the back for a great job.
That is so neat! To be able to recycle your child's rocking horse and keep it around after your child is grown is neat. Even finding one on the curb is great. Lets all start looking at every ones junk. LOL
Wow!I love this~ My husband found this post the other day and told me about it! We had gotten one missing a spring free at a yard sale a while back so he wants to do this but I wanted to find out what kind of paint you used.
I would like to purchase one of these for my little girl's 1st bday. Does anyone know where I can get one of these less expensive ones made of plastic?
Mary, I know that I am reading your post quite a number of years since it was originally posted, but, I just want to thank you for posting the picture and instructions on how you "upcycled" a castaway child's rocking horse into a beautiful carousel horse.
I have wanted a carousel horse for many years and now even more so that I have instructions to make an affordable one. Now, I just have to find an affordable rocking horse so that I can fulfill my "want". Again, Thank you!
I love Carousel Horses. Just something about them. What a fabulous thing to do with an old horse. Absolutely beautiful!
that is just stunning but mine would have been white because most things in my home are white and pink. you have done magnificent work on this horse. blessings
Mary can you please tell me what kind of paint you used. Not sure if I need craft paint or spray paint like Krylon for plastic. Also varnish . Did you use Mode podge outdoor. Or spray varnish . Thanks
Hi, Love your work! High five for the whole project. I read through your process but I was wondering specificlly what type of brackets you used to mount the horse to a pole. I've ben googling and no one seems to have that info. Thanking you in advance.
