I am always buying pine chips, mulch, and other things I would rather not have spill in my car. By carrying around masking tape on my purse, I can cover up holes and tears in the packaging when they occur, and they often do.

That's a good idea. It works great for patching holes in bags.
I'm surprised at the number of people who don't know what masking tape is. Thanks for letting them know a very good way of using it.
It's great to have it on hand. But with my purse, it might scream "Keep it in the car"!!
I like your idea. I carry masking tape in my vehicle also. It works great when you pull a piece of connect the two ends and then put 2 fingers in middle and roll across your clothes .
Another option is to buy an inexpensive shower liner to keep in the car and simply unfold when buying soil or mulch, a big bag of flour or anything else which might easily make a mess if the bag splits.
