As a grandmother of seven, I carry a small pair of scissors in my purse. I also did this when my kids were growing up. I have used them often for many things but especially to shorten the drinking straws for the small ones making the straws safer and more manageable.

My pocketbook was more for the grandkids then for me when they were little lol. I had small scissors for cutting those straws, a pack of crayons to keep boredom down while waiting for meals to be served and occasionally a small toy to play with. They knew what I carried and always asked for things when needed such as the scissors.
I have always carried a pair of folding scissors on a keychain with other things like a 2-ended screwdriver that fits my glasses and a WWII can opener. I also carry a "multi-tool" that has all kinds of things on it including a flashlight and pliers.
