A couple of months after giving birth my cat began losing hair by her tail. And it seems as though it is spreading. This was the second time she had kittens, but this has never happened before.

As your cat has had babies recently, she may have a nutritional problem as she must provide all the milk for her babies from the food you feed her. Please take her to your vet immediately to check on the problem and provide the best treatment for her and her babies. Any delay will cdertainly worsen the condition and may harm the babies.
This can be caused by nutritional deficiencies. When cats are nursing, most of the nutrition from their food goes to the milk.
It should clear up now the kittens are weaned. Since she has had kittens before, my guess is she never recovered her nutrition levels completely after the first time.
This was a major problem for us. Our one cat had licked his butt, tail, and stomach hairless and raw. After going through a lot of trying to find out why, and trying to help, we found the reason. The cat litter we had used for 30 years and used for numerous generations of kitties, had changed their formula and he was allergic to it.
