Cat Sometimes Poops by the Door?

I have a 2 year old male cat. Randomly he will, in the middle of the night, poop near my front door. The door that he poops by does not go outside. It leads to a hallway that goes outside. This is not an every night thing. It is very random. I have placed a litter box near there. It's used for both pee and poop and then one night he just poops on the floor. Please help me.
