We have an elderly cat that messes everywhere in the house, on carpet and tiles. He has been to the vet multiple times and no diagnoses are ever made. We have multiple cat boxes, upstairs and downstairs, in close proximity to areas that he regularly messes and in areas he messes. The litter boxes upstairs have different types of litter in them and it still does not work. He uses the boxes sometimes, but still messes everywhere else. No signs of arthritis as he easily goes up and down stairs and up onto surfaces. It's not laziness because he will move from upstairs to downstairs or vice versa just to urinate. This is becoming a big problem in the house. Please help.

My Mother in law is going through the same thing. Her cat is nearly 20 years old and has been an indoor cat her whole life and never had any issues not using the litter box until maybe this last year. I think perhaps they are just not able to hold it until they get to the litter box kind of like us when we age our muscles and reflexes in our bladder are not as strong and we gradually have less control the older we get. Another issue is the cats litter box is upstairs if the cat is downstairs she will simply go in one of the rooms downstairs than try to make it all the way up the stairs. I suggested to my Mother in law she get a litter box for both up and downstairs. So is your litter box easily accessible for the cat? You may need to move it closer to where the cat spends a lot of its time or get an additional box.
