Cause of Sudden Death of Pit Bull/Mastiff?

My girlfriend had this dog named Dean since he was a puppy. He was a Pit Bull Mastiff mix and when he passed away on us he was going to be 3 years old. Her parents check on our animals frequently since she and I work and we live with them. They found him with an anal prolapse and we had rushed him to the vet.

They had fixed the problem and gave him some medicine. We had followed their instructions, then 2 weeks later we got his stitches out and a couple days later he started prolapsing again so we took him back to the vet. They put more stitches in and then a couple of days later he passed away trying to go poop.

He was perfectly fine up until then and all of a sudden he just fell right over. I was on the phone with the vet's office for a half hour or so and they had said that there must have been something else wrong with the dog. He was outside quit a bit and he was like that for about 2 years. We still have no idea what could have caused him to just pass like that or how to prevent his brother from ending up with the same fate. What can we do?

Oh my, you have my deepest sympathies on your loss.

It sounds like you did everything right and got him good vet care. Sadly, like people, sometimes dogs pass unexpectedly. It could have been anything from...either complications to the prolapse like sepsis or it could have been totally unrelated and just his time.

I am sorry to hear your vet isn't being more forthcoming with thoughts on what happened and are being guarded with answers. Did the pup see the same vet all the time or whomever was on call? If it was whomever was on call, perhaps you could talk to one of the other vets and get his/her take.

Keep up with the pup's sibling, getting it good care and hopefully the pup will lead a long healthy live.

It is so sad when we lose fur babies before their time. Prayers for all. Sending up lots of good wishes for everyone!

Short of having an autopsy, there is little way of knowing what happened to this dog. Dogs, like people, often have undiagnosed conditions that only come to light when a serious illness or death happens.

You have my condolences.

Hi,

I am so sorry to hear of this happening to your dear pet. This type of prolapse can be due to intestinal tumors, or blockages of any kind, worms or many other causes.

It is not really easy to place the cause on one thing. I am not a Veterinarian, but I am thinking he might have had something genetic going on or possibly a twisted intestine, or was genetically predisposed to bloat.

I am so sorry for your loss. It is hard, when we do everything we can to help our pets, and it doesn't help them enough to save them.

As for any other dogs, related to this one, I would feed a high quality food, and always check for recalls, by googling 'Dog food recalls'.

Also never let them eat lots of human food, and especially not hard bread items like pizza crusts. Make sure they take small mouth-fuls of food and not gobble food down. This can be difficult.

I wish you the best.
