My 18 month old Borzoi woke me up with a terrible mournful cry and and died instantly. He was in good health and a very active boy. He came from a registered breeder with health tested parents. A post mortem was done, but there were no answers. Is this sudden death? Is there anything I could have done?

Dogs are similar to people. It could have been anything and you may never find out the cause. I am sorry he died, I am sure you have lots of good memories.
You have my most heartfelt condolences on your loss. So sad for all. May your beautiful pup's memory always be a blessing to you!
It was good you did a postmortem, but sad that it had no answers. The vet could give you no insights? Perhaps the breeder can give you some insights on challenges that my be relevant to the breed. Every breed has something that can cause a premature passing.
Death in any species can be a mystery. I always say G-d knows but he isn't telling. Sometimes we just have to hold on to the good memories and keep them close to our hearts. Hold on to the lovely life you gave your sweet baby!!
If you find yourself having challenges dealing with your grief, there are a lot of resources available in many communities. Our one rescue has a grief group for pet parents who have lost their fur babies. Our local funeral home has one for people who have lost anyone (human or pet).
It is so hard to lose a pet. Be easy on yourself.
Take care. Sending up prayers for your family.
