Our steel roof leaks - can't find out where or why but only a bit after infrequent heavy rains. Would be glad of any tips on a way of ceiling repair that will let through the rain and look OK beside the unaffected ceiling parts.

Go in the attic and look for the area of water wetness and follow the run above the leak where it begins. Also, if you have a metal roof, you get on the roof and look for a loose bolt where water seeps in. I don't actually like the idea of getting on top of a metal roof as it's slippery when wet, so you can wait for a dry roof and inspect all the bolts for any loosen one(s).
Finding where a leak starts/begins can be a very tricky job, as it is rarely near where the water actually drips or make stains.
There is usually a lot of damage to the surrounding area that is not noticeable until you start doing repairs.
There is a lot of information needed to even begin to address your problem.
I'm not sure if there is a member of ThriftyFun with the kind of experience or knowledge it will require to answer your question.
How old is your metal roof?
Is it still under warranty?
What is the angle?
What type of insulation?
Have you had a professional evaluation completed with an estimate of cost to repair? This is needed as it may provide information on just how extensive the problem may be.
This is only a small number of answers that may be needed for someone to actually discuss repairs.
I have some links to building forums that may be able to provide a few answers but they will usually want pictures also.
Some links may show up with 'old' questions but the question may relate to your problem.
All of this takes time but if you're asking for DIY answers, these are the people to ask.
