I just found out that my supermarket has a policy that will give an incorrectly scanned item to you for free. The item must be $10 or less. The store will give you a $10 discount on items that are more than $10. Because of this knowledge, I got a $7.99 package of burgers for free. The checkers often will not tell you this, but must adhere to the policy if you mention it.

Yes, Donna is correct. The cashier is not at fault if the scan system is being used in stores. Maybe for entering the wrong PLU on fruits, veggies, and in-store water machine items. Everything else is loading into the store computers from the main office and they have in-store staff whose job it is to check the numbers for errors and to scan and check the signs and prices on the shelves to make sure they all coincide. It is not only the main office's job, the store's scan coordinators job, the cashier and stock clerks job, but also our job to make sure these prices are what they should be.
I always use the "check out yourself" aisle at Safeway, Walmart and other places. It shows right there on the screen in front of you exactly what your discount is so you don't have to try to decipher those complicated receipts after you have paid.
