Directions:
In a large bowl, stir together flour, cocoa powder, salt, baking powder and baking soda. In another bowl, beat together butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg to vanilla; beat well. Put into flour mixture and mix well.
Shape dough into 1 inch balls. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Press dough center with your thumb. Place drained cherry in center of each cookie (reserve the juice).
In a small pan, combine chocolate pieces and condensed milk. Heat until chocolate is melted. Stir in 4 teaspoons reserved cherry juice. Spoon about 1 teaspoon frosting over each cherry, spreading to cover the cherry. (Frosting may be thinned a little with more juice.) Bake in 350 degree oven about 10 minutes. Remove to wire rack to cool. Makes about 48 cookies.

I am looking for a recipe from the 1950's for a cookie using dates, maraschino cherries and cornflakes. It won a Pillsbury bake off.

Is it the Cherry Wink recipe that is listed on allrecipes.com?
I'll venture to bet that if you contacted Pillsbury that the recipe would be in their archives and they would help you find it or find it for you ... Go to the bottom this link and lick on 'contact':
I am sure this recipe has been modified from the original, but it's not Christmas at our home without these cookies.
CHERRY WINKS
3/4 cup crisco
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 Tbsp milk
1 tsp vanilla
2-1/4 cups pre-sifted flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1 cup chopped nuts
1 cup chopped dates
1 cup raisins or currants
1/3 cup chopped cherries, plus more
2 tsp maraschino cherry juice
2-1/2 cups crushed corn flakes
Cream shortening and sugar. Blend in eggs, milk, vanilla, and dry ingredients. Add dates, nuts, raisins, cherries; mix well. Drop dough by spoonfuls into flakes. Top with 1/4 cherry (pushed in). Bake on greased sheet for 12-15 minutes at 375. [The cookies should not brown, or they will be very dry.] Makes about 5 dozen cookies.
