Quite by accident, I realized that spatula handles come off. And when they do, omgosh! Now I am guessing this is not all food that gets trapped, but perhaps soap scum and/or?
Whatever it is, it's not healthy and should be cleaned about once a month. I clean mine out with a Q-tip and then soak it in bleach water. When it's clean, (see the one on the right), I put the handle back on.
Hope this helps!

What a timely post! This same thing just happened to me a couple of weeks ago, though my spatula wasn't as moldy as yours was inside.
I did an online search for this issue and found that many others had the same unhappy surprise as I had! I followed the suggestions and soaked both the handle and blade in bleach water and it did eliminate the mold.
Ultimately, though, I was still too bothered by the thought of it being a spot that could gather bacteria, so I discarded that spatula and shopped for a new one. This time I chose one where the handle and blade are permanently attached.
If my old spatula would have been a family heirloom or something I would have kept it, but it wasn't so I didn't!
I had the same situation. I realized the top came off, too. I cleaned out the mold then, and every time since. Thanks for posting.
You are welcome!
I used spatulas like this for years and found the same thing you have was going on. I had to keep them clean as well.
My daughter gave me some solid ones that are heat resistant up to 450 degrees and I love them.
Oh can you tell us where to get them? I cook every day and anything that helps stay safe and sanitary is worth it Thanks in advance!
She got me some at the mall in Wilmington, NC. The name of store is Kitchen Collection. They make great little gifts and they don't cost but a few dollars each. I've have been using them for several years. On this website, you can find the locations of their stores. I have never been in one.
Just for curiosity, I looked back at my recipes that have been posted on TF and the spatulas are pictured in a lot of them back to 7-13-16. Before that, there are not as many pictures in the steps of my recipes. I knew I have been using them for several years and they are still good as new.
Great idea to clean and bleach the spatula head and handle. After they are both completely dry, put just a little clear silicone caulk down in the head slot, push the handle in, and let set for 24 hours...now the spatula head is sealed from anything being able to get down in there ever again.
What a great idea!! Thanks for helping us all!!
I discovered the spatula situation recently myself. Odd.... And I did the same thing with soaking them in bleach water.
I take them apart to clean them when I do the dishes every day... They are stored in the drawer in parts and only get put back together when I need to use them.
