My mother crocheted beautiful dolls clothes that I can't remove from the doll. How can I clean them?

You really need to know what the dolls are stuffed with. If it is a foam stuffing like they use in some stuff animals this might work. But there are a few foam stuffings in pillows if washed will destroy them completely. However, come can be washed fine and make it.

I was almost thinking if you can actually clean the doll and clothes at the same time this might work for you. But like I said this will all depend on what the doll is stuffed with.

You could try encasing the head of the doll in a plastic bag and taping it around the neck of the doll to protect the hair and doll makeup. Now if the doll can be submerged in water you can use a small wash tub with mild soap to soak the doll and clothes in. You might need to gently rub the dress to clean the really bad spots on it. After you can take the doll and hang it up to drip dry. That is, providing the stuffing is the right kind to get wet.

Other than this if the dolls are valuable, then you might need to go and see a person who restores dolls and ask them to clean them for you. They'd know the best way to do this.

I do not believe that cleaning a doll and doll clothes without removing the clothes from the doll would be easy or very successful.

  • Success would probably depend a lot on what composition is the doll and maybe even the size of the doll.

  • Most dolls should never be completely wet so that is the first problem as it may take soap and water to clean the clothing.
  • What is the reason the clothes cannot be removed? If they were made on the dolls, is there no way to remove them and then do some repairs to replace them?
  • What type of doll are you talking about? A Barbie style doll? Cloth body doll? Wig/hair? Open and close eyes?
  • Can the doll be cleaned if you remove the clothing? Are they attached to the body from age?
  • Some doll repair "people" say to use baking soda and place doll (with clothing) in a bag and shake and wait a day and shake again. Remove doll and gently brush away the baking soda.
  • This might work (a little) if the hair was no problem or the makeup of the doll was not a problem.
  • Someone may be able to help you further if you could post a picture of your doll.

  • This site has some instructions on cleaning without water (about middle of the article) that might help you.

You could try gently vacuuming them or spot cleaning them with mild soap.
