How do you clean the underneath inside lid of a washing machine. It looks brown.

White vinegar and an old toothbrush. (09/07/2008)

If it is hard water residue, the vinegar will work. If vinegar is too slow, you might want to use CLR, which is just a stronger acid. It if it soap and fabric softener "gunk" you might want to use a stronger cleaner or scrape off accumulated gunk with something like a plastic spatula that won't scratch the underlying enamel. Then clean with hot water, detergent, and a brush. (09/09/2008)
