You can try just chipping it off with the side (not the pointy end) of a nail file or use a Q-tip and some nail polish remover...being very careful not to get it near the controls. If you use the remover method, test it on the back first time make sure it doesn't cause damage.
I'm guessing you heard/read that you could use nail polish remover to clean a remote?
It is possible the remover has damaged some internal parts but hopefully not.
Hope you removed the batteries before you started cleaning, but, if not, then now would be a good time to remove them.
You might try using a little alcohol on a q-tip but be very careful around any opening/buttons.

Try a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid in water.
I'd put a bit of rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and hold it against it, but don't let it get into any open compartments where buttons are.
