Nicotine in the wall makes us sick, with cough and sore throat. Can I clean the walls with cleaner or do I have to paint over?

TSP or Tri Sodium Phosphate is the best thing you can use. It's in powder or liquid form. Best stuff you can get.
Amazon sells it, but we got ours at our local Ace Hardware store. TSP is also great for dissolving that film of vaporized grease that you get on kitchen walls and cabinets.
Not only is TSP the best cleaner for removing nicotine from walls, it is an amazing cleaner/decreaser for almost any surface in your home. Everything will gleam like new again. My favorite product for all my heavy cleaning duties, with less man power, and fast results!

I'm a painter I usually clean walls really good with soapy water there's some stuff in paint aile at most place with paint u can clean with I add to my water. If your gonna paint wash the walls you need put stuff on called kills before paint its a blocker

If you're getting sick from the nicotine it may be because it's in your air ducts. Also you may need your air conditioner outside unit cleaned as well. We had to do this after purchasing a home with the previous owner being a heavy smoker.
