What would be the safest and most effective product I could use to clean a white leather couch and matching chair?

There are several leather cleaners on the market. You could use saddle soap to clean and then a leather conditioner to keep it supple.
I am thrifty and the brief time I had a leather couch that I didn't get custody of in the divorce, I lovingly cleaned it with warm water with a few drops of dawn (this was when it was just Dawn not any of the fancy kinds) and I added a tablespoon of vinegar. If there were stains, a little baking soda made into a paste usually got them out.
Saddle Soap is something I've had good results with
olive oil and vinegar (1/2 cup oil 1/4 cup vinegar) will also work well
test a space first before committing in case your leather couch does not take to it
